Best Treadmill Workout of 2015: Interval Work
Looking for a great treadmill workout? Something that will challenge you without being boring and monotonous? What many people don’t really realize is that the concept of the interval workout can be very easily applied to the treadmill. The interval workout is simplistic in construction and is easy to apply to just about any workout level. Here’s what you need to know.
What are Intervals?
Simply put, interval workouts are a type of physical exercise that rotate you through a series of low and high intensity segments. The higher intensity periods are designed to push you towards anaerobic levels, while the rest periods are designed to be a much lower intensity aerobic sequence. The variations allow you to enjoy a more functional cardiovascular workout and give you the chance to do more intense periods of work than you may have otherwise attempted.
Intervals can be incorporated into just about any type of exercise – running, cycling, or even rowing – and are very easy to incorporate into a treadmill session.
Incorporating Intervals into a Treadmill Session
You can start, of course, with your own intervals. If you’re a novice, you may want to do a 1:4 ratio of intense exercise to rest. For
example, you’d run at a fast pace for one minute and then jog or walk at a low intensity for four. As you progress, you can alter your intervals. A fitness fanatic may enjoy a 1:1 ratio, for example. Continued use of intervals allows for steady fitness progress.
There are literally dozens of pre-made interval workouts you can find online for use on a treadmill, ranging from beginner to advanced. Here are a few you might want to consider trying if you aren’t comfortable making up your own:
