Whether you’re trying to create a workout area at home or you're checking out the new gym in town, take the time to make sure the area will work for you. Not all workout areas are the same and not everyone requires the same kind of setup. The more appealing the area is for you, the more frequently you will visit it. Make the experience as pleasant and productive as possible so you get more out of it!
If you have a room that is dedicated to working out, it should have plenty of space. You don't want to feel crowded while you try to get from one machine to the next. At the same time, don't let a small room stop you from enjoying a great exercise routine. There are plenty of home gyms that take up nothing more than a doorway, but provide multiple options for working out. The key is to use your space wisely.
Many people workout in their garage or basement. That's a great way to make use of available space. Just make sure you can adjust the temperature. Otherwise, you could be making your body work too hard to cool down or end up with cramps from working out in an area that is not warm enough.
What do you want to see when you work out? Mirrors can be beneficial because it sometimes helps to have visual stimulation while you work those muscle groups. Try adding a few motivational posters and signs as well. Get strategic about it and hang your motivational décor in areas where you might be more likely to be losing steam so you have something to help keep you going. You might even find that old pair of jeans you are trying to fit back into and hang them on the wall as a motivator.
Keep your home gym clean and as free of clutter as possible. Avoid stuffed chairs or anything that might promote prolonged relaxation. There should be a chair in the room in case you need to sit down when you are tired, but this isn't the lounging area. You want to stay motivated and active. That means bright lights instead of soft, soothing ones. And don't forget to add some speakers into the mix! Music can be a very powerful motivator in any home gym.
