It seems like everyone wants to lose a little bit of weight before the summer. They want to look good in vacation pictures, feel good in shorts and swimsuits, and generally feel better all around. While we can’t condone “quick” weight loss methods, the good news is that you still have plenty of time to start a new, healthy fitness and nutrition routine – one that will leave you feeling great for the summer and for the months after.
One huge mistake people make when attempting to lose weight is doing too much, too fast. You don’t have to completely alter your kitchen landscape and start an intense exercise routine all at the same time. You’ll get tired and crash and burn. Try changing just a few things at a time and add on as you become more accustomed to your new routine. Start by aiming to exercise 30 minutes a day. Make sure you eat breakfast daily. Drink more water. Choose something rather attainable to start.
Speaking of water, make sure you are drinking enough of it. Don’t believe the people telling you to drink an ounce of water for every pound of body weight, either. That’s a ton of water and most people don’t actually need that much. Aim for about 60-80 ounces per day, unless you have a medical condition that warrants limiting your intake more. Water will promote better kidney and liver function and will help you get toxins out of your body. Oh, and while you’re at it? Ditch the fancy coffee drinks – make a cup of plain coffee with a little sweetener at home. Cut out the sodas, juices, and alcohol, too. In other words, stop drinking your calories.
Be mindful, especially when eating and snacking. Are you about to gorge on a bowl of cereal or a sandwich on white bread or could you choose a complex carb that’s better for your body – like oatmeal or brown rice? Take a careful look at every food choice you make. Foods high in carbs and fats aren’t as good as foods high in protein and healthy fats. Don’t focus as much on what you can’t have as you do on what you can have and you’ll feel a lot better about your choices. Make sure you are keeping an eye on portion sizes, too.
