You should be able to get to your cardio equipment, weights, and other pieces with ease, without having to move laundry baskets or clean up children’s toys first. The more equipment you plan on having, the more space you’ll need.

You don’t need to buy everything you want right off the bat. The best home gym is one that is ever-evolving with your needs. But what are your needs? Are you a runner who needs a treadmill, or will any piece of cardio equipment do – like a bike or a rowing machine? Do you love to use workout DVD’s? In that case, your home gym needs a TV and DVD player. Prioritize your purchases and be realistic so that you don’t end up with a room full of gear you a) never use or b) don’t know how to use. You can always add things later as your interests and level of fitness evolve.
Bonus tip: quality is more important than quantity. If you’re going to spend money on fitness equipment, make sure it has good reviews, is priced fairly (note, not the cheapest), and comes from a reputable company.
Create an Atmosphere
Working out at home can be a little lonely from time to time, so make sure you aren’t starting at unfinished basement walls the whole time. Make sure your workout area has some sort of safe distraction, like motivational music or a television you can use to watch your favorite shows while you grind through your cardio routine. Hang up a few motivational posters, too, while you’re at it – anything that will make you feel good while you work out.
